Well this past Saturday I was able to experience the Service style of policing first hand. At a MSU vs. U of M football game party in my dorm's lounge last weekend there was snack food, drinks (non-alcoholic), games, and "water"-pong. There was also a policeman who decided to join our party. He played some pong, hung out, and talked with some people at the party.
As I watched the MSU officer socialize with some of the students I realized that he was demonstrating a style of policing where connecting with the community is important. Police at MSU feel the need to create a feeling of trust between them and students and this officer was showing that perfectly.
I was moved by the officer's actions and I actually did feel more comfortable. I now feel that I have a connection with police here at MSU. And as a service style unit, this is exactly what they strive for.
i think this is really cool! I like how you added photos as well! I agree with you 100% It's important for people to not only think of cops as the 'bad guys' all the time. They do a lot of good for our community!
ReplyDeleteThats kind of cool how an officer played games and hung out with you guys. One thing i think is kind of weird is that he was hanging out with you guys..... Doesn't he have crime to fight? Or do MSU cops just wait around for the next ticket or MIP? These are my main concerns, we taxpayers pay these officers to protect us, yet instead they play games with students to insure, that kids dont drink underage. If that was the officers main goal, id say he needs to rethink his goals, because there is toooooooooo much underage drinking for them to handle. He should stick to speed traps and dishing out the MIPs.
ReplyDeleteRyan! Firstly, I just wanted to say that I loved reading your blog post! Hanging out with a police officer, especially at a party sounds awesome and a great experience as well. I absolutely agree that police officers should definitely connect to the college students on campus. The connection and understanding is are important aspects for a good relationship between MSU police officers and MSU students. Ryan, how was the experience hanging out with a police officer? What was going on in your head when you were conversing with the officer? What all were you guys talking about? Looking forward to reading the rest of your blog man!
